Since the initial issue of our Code of Ethics in 2012, Furla has taken many steps towards establishing itself as a company that is increasingly concerned about its internal and external stakeholders and complying with statutory requirements. In 2016, in fact, for Italy and, as a result, the parent company Furla Spa, the Company adopted the Model envisaged by Legislative Decree 231/2011. Subsequently, in 2018, we radically revised our Code of Ethics, following the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact. It now identifies the ethical and business guidelines that Furla is committed to pursuing and also promoting among its partners, such as customers, suppliers, employees, and institutions. Its five pillars are Human Rights, Employment, Environment, Anti-Corruption, Transparency, and Confidentiality. These same values are the foundation of our Supplier Manual, which we redefined the same year. It describes the relationship of transparency and fairness that Furla fosters throughout its value chain. We share these documents with our business partners as appropriate. The most up-to-date versions can be freely accessed on our website, and downloaded.
Code of Ethics - Privacy Policy- Supplier Manual
Cowhide is the primary raw material used in Furla's production. This is why our Company pays particular attention to the choice of its suppliers, prioritizing sourcing from Italian tanneries, and purchasing through certified channels. In particular, during the first half of 2020, we purchased 75% of our leather* from tanneries certified by the Leather Working Group (LWG), the international and multi-stakeholder body that has developed the world's most widespread sustainability protocol for the leather supply chain. Moreover, during the same period, 30% of the leather* we purchased was certified for traceability under the TS PC 412 scheme of the Italian Institute for quality certification for the tanning industry (Istituto di Certificazione della Qualità per l'Industria Conciaria – ICEC), thus assuring the transparency and traceability of our supply chain.Furla is committed to collaborating with the authorities and supporting such schemes among its suppliers, firmly believing in their effectiveness for achieving an increasingly responsible supply chain.
*the percentage refers to leather for directly managed production, taking into account the square meters purchased.
Furla is fully aware that even the supply chains that seem to be less challenging can hide problems. Therefore, until we can obtain reasonable guarantees of transparency and high standards of animal welfare, Furla and its partners are committed to rationalizing the use of natural fibres of animal origin, excluding many of them from its production. As a non-limiting example, Mohair and Angora wool are excluded. For the fibres we allow, the Company will choose only suppliers who can provide suitable assurances.
Wool Claim
In addition to being the fruit of creativity, Furla products are also the outcome of the Company's research and commitment on materials. In fact, in 2018 Furla developed its Raw Material Guidelines. These guidelines are based on a matrix that intersects the ten main macro-categories of raw materials from our current or past collections, accurately defining the perimeter of each, with seven sustainability criteria. For each case, Furla describes the regulatory requirements and best practices from a sustainability point of view. The Raw Material Guidelines apply to both Furla's direct and indirect production – i.e., through licensees – and are continuously supplemented as regulations are updated, and in line with the growing series of commitments that the Company is undertaking.
The categories currently included are 1 – Fur; 2 – Leather; 3 – Fine leather; 4 – Natural fibres of animal origin (wool); 5 – Natural fibres of animal origin (silk); 6 – Natural fibres of vegetable origin; 7 – Artificial fibres of cellulosic origin; 8 – Artificial fibres of synthetic origin; 9 – Paper; 10 – Metals.
Furla recognizes the value of its people as being vital to its success. To ensure that they can perform their jobs in the best possible conditions, in 2019 Furla Spa achieved ISO 45001: 2018-Certification – Occupational health and safety management systems for all its sites located in Italy. It updates and extends the scope of our previous OHSAS 18001: 2007 certification, a sign of a commitment that is already firmly rooted in the history of the Company. The new, internationally recognized standard certifies that we have met the requirements of occupational health and safety management and that therefore the Company provides safe and healthy workplaces, prevents accidents at work and health problems, acts continuously and proactively, and acts based on real analysis of risks and opportunities to achieve continuous improvement.
ISO 45001: 2018-Certification
In 2019 Furla joined the Fur Free Alliance, an association that is made up of almost 1,500 brands and retailers committed to eliminating the use and trade of natural fur of all animals bred mainly for their fur. Concerning the scope of the definition of "fur", Furla follows the definition given by the Fur Free Alliance itself; for example, Furla does not use fox, rabbit, murmasky, and mink fur.
Fur Free
Furla recognizes that it has both direct environmental impacts both through its own sites such as offices, stores, production sites, and warehouses, and through indirect impacts due to its suppliers' production sites. The Company acts within the extent of its influence on the indirect impacts by promoting good practices with its suppliers while it is actively engaged on the direct impacts. In 2018 we started transitioning from purchasing energy from traditional sources to obtaining it from renewable sources, and our objectives are continually rising. At the end of 2019, 100% of Furla sites in Italy* were powered by energy from renewable sources, as were 82% of those in Europe*. The Company is constantly tracking the situation to further extend its use of energy from renewable sources.
*excluding shop-in-shops for which there is a single electricity supply contract, which we cannot affect.
Since the beginning of 2019, Furla has completely overhauled its retail packaging to offer a solution that is aesthetically pleasing but also positive from a sustainability point of view. In fact, we have redesigned our paper packaging to use FSC certified paper, which contains at least 40% post-consumer recycled material, does not use chlorine in the recycling process, and is printed with vegetable-based inks. Besides, we have eliminated the outer plastic film to make bag recycling easier and more effective. The project began by involving retail and product packaging, which constitutes the vast majority, and was gradually extended to include all elements.
Paper Packaging Project
Prior to 2017, Furla worked on a range of projects to respond to specific Sustainability & CSR requirements. At the end of 2017, to cope with the growing attention paid to these issues, we set up a Sustainability & CSR department and since then, the Company has implemented a set of instruments such as its new Code of Ethics, its Suppliers' Manual, and several policies that lay down the Company's values, as well as a strategy to drive new Social and Environmental Responsibility projects. We have also set up specific bodies that suggest, validate, and monitor projects: the Sustainability Committee, which also includes some top managers of the areas affected by the projects, and the Ethics Committee, which gathers and deals with reports – internal or external – on the issues addressed by the Code of Ethics. The third control body, solely for Furla Spa, is the Supervisory Board, required by Legislative Decree no. 231/2011 as regards administrative liability arising out of a criminal offence, established in 2016 at the same time as the Internal Audit department.
